Frequently Asked Questions
What is the length of the school day? Grades K-8th begin at 8:00 and are dismissed at 3:00 pm. Please see attached for our various preschool class sessions and times.
PreSchool Handbook
Is extended care available? Pre-K through grade 8 are welcome to attend extended care. Morning extended care opens at 7:00 am, and students are dismissed prior to school starting. Afternoon hours are from dismissal until 6:00 pm. The program provides structured activities and free time. The staff members ensure the safety of all participants. Breakfast is served in the morning, and snacks are provided in the afternoon. A study area is designated for students working on homework.

What is the school uniform? Our Preschool does not have a required uniform. Grades K-8th are required to wear our school uniform. Uniforms can be purchased at Schoolbelles and Lands’ End.
Parent Handbook
What is the average class size? The average class size has 17 students. Some classes may have a few more students, some a few less. In classes with more students, teachers often have an aide or assistance from other staff members.
What is kindergarten screening and when does it take place? Kindergarten screening is a tool used by the teachers to measure kindergarten readiness. It will take place in late spring.
When do I need to register to ensure a spot in the class? Registration of new Preschool students and students in Grades K-8 is currently open!

Do you have any tuition assistance programs? Families seeking financial assistance will be provided additional information through our FACTS program. FACTS is a tuition payment management platform for families with children in grades K-8 that St. Mary Chardon utilizes (see Tuition Link above).
Do you have any health services available? A Registered Nurse or Health Aide is available during the school day from 9:30 am until 1:00 pm.
How can parents be involved? Parents are welcome as volunteers in the classrooms and for a variety of extracurricular activities. Our Parent Teacher Union (PTU) encourages parents to participate as well. No matter your interest, there is a way to get involved! Visit the Service Opportunities page for more information.
What is a Makerspace? A Makerspace is a specially designed space for students to use the Engineering Design Process to solve challenges. Equipped with a 3-D printer, greenscreen, laser cutter and more, these tools help the students create and improve their designs.
Who uses the greenhouse? Our greenhouse is called The Learning Garden and is utilized by every student at St. Mary. Students have grown vegetables for our cafeteria to use in the salads served at lunch and started sunflower seeds in The Learning Garden.
How often do students attend Mass? The Pre-K through grade 8 attend Mass together weekly. Pre-K is dismissed after the homily. Religion classes take place daily. The children also have opportunities to attend prayer services, retreats, and other faith-building activities throughout the year.
