St. Mary School Chardon- Academic Offerings Overview

St. Mary School Chardon follows the curriculum that is developed, in accordance with the state standards, by the Curriculum Department of the Office of Catholic Formation and Education for use in all elementary schools in the Diocese of Cleveland.  All of our teachers are licensed by the Ohio Department of Education in State of Ohio.

Our Primary Grades are self-contained classrooms in grades Kindergarten through third grades.  All of the students in these grades also participate in the following classes:  Art, Computer, Music, Spanish, Physical Education, and Library.  Qualified students also attend Enrichment Classes.

Some of our Primary Level teachers use the Daily Five method of teaching literacy.  All of the teachers use the Fountas & Pinnelli Assessment and Leveled Reading Program to promote differentiated instruction

Our Middle Grades- fourth and fifth grades are departmentalized. The students move twice between the fourth and fifth grade teachers for various subjects. In addition they also participate in Art, Computer, Music, Spanish, Physical Education, and Library.  Qualified students attend Enrichment Classes. Beginning in fourth grade students may elect to participate in the school band program.

Our Junior High students in grades six, seven, and eight grade are departmentalized by core subjects.  Each of our junior high teachers is high school certified.  The eighth grade students have the opportunity to qualify for Honors Math - Algebra and Honors English which may earn them high school credit and advance placement.  In addition they also participate in Art, Computer, Integrated Studies, Music, Spanish, Physical Education, and Library.  They may also elect to participate in Band.

All of our students, Kindergarten through eighth grade receive daily Religion instructions.  All of our teachers are certified by the diocese to teach religion.

All of our teachers utilize both formative and summative assessments in their subjects and classes. Assessments are both traditional and project based.  Our Junior High students participate in Seminars that are based upon the Socratic method of learning.

Student who may need additional support in learning, receive additional instruction from our Intervention Specialist, Educational Tutor, and Speech Pathologist.

In addition our students partake in national standardized tests that include The Iowa Test of Basic Skills, The Cognitive Abilities Test, The NCEA ACRE Test, and the State Writing Proficiency Test.

St Mary Chardon is located at 401 North Street in the heart of historic Chardon Village, just north of the town square.  We are the only STEM Designated school in Geauga County and service students preschool through 8th grade.
