We have successfully completed the first week of this school year! I really hope that we can keep this momentum going as we move through the rest of the year. As we begin this new year allow me to share a few important updates with you.
Little Scholar Academy of St. Mary School has expanded this year. We now house three classrooms with three teachers and three aids in each room. Twelve students are enrolled in the full day/everyday pre-kindergarten program. We are very excited to have a full house in our early education department. We welcome our teachers – Mrs. Flynn, Mrs. Rowan, and Mrs. Ryan along with their aid – Mrs. Yates, Mrs. Burich, and Mrs. Ford to our staff.
Our all day pre- kindergartners will be joining us for lunch in the cafeteria this year. They will have their own aid helping them with opening containers, opening packaging, and pouring liquids. To accommodate them, we have reconfigured our lunch periods and classes a bit. Our Junior High students will now have their own lunch period. This will give them a little more freedom to move around and socialize as they no longer have recess. The students in Kindergarten through second grade will be together, and the third through fifth grades will be together. This arrangement gives everyone more space both in the cafeteria and on the playground.
We are very much in need of lunch/recess volunteer monitors for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays as well as substitutes. Please call us at 286-3590 even if you can just do part of the time! Your help is gratefully accepted! We also need a part time cook assistant. This is a paid position through the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. Please call our school office and we will forward you the information needed to apply.
Las year we completed the required Crisis Plan for our school. It was approved by our law enforcement offices, fire department, and Ohio Department of Education last spring. This plan includes procedures for various scenarios including evacuation and reunification protocols. St. Mary School will evacuate to Chardon middle School when deemed necessary. The students will be housed in the LGIR room by class with their teachers. Reunification with parents will take place at the Middle School in the front lobby. Parents will need to come and sign their children out before we will release them.
Our 2016-2017 Family Handbook may be found online on our webpage. It has been updated and is a great resource for you throughout the school year. We will also be using ASCEND as our communication platform with parents and students. Please check it regularly and let us know if you are experiencing any issues.
We are looking forward to a great year together as we joyfully share our gifts on our journey!
Joyfully in Christ,
Mary Petelin, Principal
