My little blog today will digress from the usual way that I communicate with you. Today I would like to share a reflection.
Last week our school sponsored an event for the first time. It is not the event itself that I would like to write about, even though Trunk or Treat was very successful. I would like to share my thoughts on the feelings and fellowship that stemmed from it.
The event was open to everyone – school families, parish families, and the Chardon community at large. Everyone was welcome. One felt the hospitality immediately. Even before it began, just with the people decorating the cars and vans, there was camaraderie and good will. Tape, scissors, decorations, good advice and compliments were freely shared. Much laughter and jokes were exchanged. People decorating, and later trick or treating were of all ages from toddlers to senior citizens, yet all mingled and enjoyed each other’s displays and company. It was truly a multi-generational event.
I observed parents and grandparents walking children from car to car, enjoying a hot dog from the Booster’s stand, a bag of popcorn from Northcoast Popcorn Company, or just munching on candy and treats. The children were polite and thankful when receiving treat. Older children walked with younger ones making sure that they were safe. The Boy Scouts provided us with warmth by building a fire to take the nip out of our noses and toes once the sun went down. The Chardon Fire Department gave mini tours of their truck and EMS van. Smiles and laughter could be heard throughout the evening. If I didn’t know that it was 2015, I would have imagined that I was at a church picnic back in time.
The good will and friendships shared at this event speak to who we are as Catholics. Living our faith sharing our stories is a joyful part of who we are as followers of Christ. I felt it was truly embodied on the evening of October 22nd. My hope is that this joy and good will continues to grow and enrich our parish life in all aspects. I feel blessed to have been a part of it! I hope you do too!
