Please allow me to introduce you to our school librarian and our library facility. Mrs. Carla Solomon assumed the position of part time librarian last year. In the morning she is our Junior High social Studies teacher. Mrs. Solomon has brought some outstanding changes to our school library.
The circulation system in the library was failing and antiquated. Mrs. Solomon spent the better part of last year researching various systems, prices, and values to upgrade. The new circulation system, Mandarin, is currently being implemented. Though it may take some time for it to function optimally, it will surely provide our students with terrific data base and a wealth of knowledge. The newly designed web based program supports students in narrowing down searches to help them locate just the right book.
AR/STAR once again is helping our students to progress in reading. The STAR Test, which is typically administered at the beginning and end of the school year, assesses the student’s reading level. These reading levels help students to find and select appropriate reading level books for the Accelerated Reading Program (AR). The front cover of many books at SMS Library has the reading level and points written in them. This makes it easy for the students to independently find and select books. Parents and students may also find this information at: arbookfing.com. Parents may also log into hsoted62.renlearn/104783/HomeConnect to view their child’s grade. Login is required.
The library has acquired so many new books! The shelves are filled with exciting reading materials. Both teacher and student was considered when purchasing the new books for the library. Come and browse our collection!
A new and exciting addition is the new canopy that is used in the Reflection Garden off the side of the library. The area itself is beautiful but often not useable because of the lack of shade and heat generated by the sun. Mrs. Solomon, through money accrued from the past book fair, PTU assistance, and bake sales, purchased a canopy for the area. Now students can enjoy time outside reading or studying during their library time or with their homeroom teachers. With the help of our PTU a few folding chairs were also purchased for this area.
Our next Book Fair is scheduled for the week of November 7th. Information on the Library Bake-Off will be coming home in October. The BOGO Book Fair is scheduled for the week of April 3rd. Help support our library with a purchase or donation! Thanks to these endeavors and the generosity of the PTU, our school library is bigger and brighter than ever! Our students have so many worlds to explore when they come in and open a book!
Joyfully in Christ,
Mary Petelin, Principal
